Up Close and Personal with Greg
I have been thinking more seriously about life lately… Life’s challenges, life’s joys and how it seems that the harder/smarter I work the luckier I get. It all started with an overnight emergency stay at Mt. Hood Medical last week but that’s another story for later. It got me to thinking about an article I saw on the concept of luck and how it may actually be directly related to effort. When I was single I knew that if I asked 4 women out chances are one would accept. Of course I had very good odds because I was very charming when I was younger. In business I know that if I talk to 50 people per day one will have real-estate needs. But the other day on my first call I had someone who had a real estate need. Was that luck?
Luck and success are just part of the equation though. I was thinking about the German philosopher Max Weber who introduced a more serious philosophy that suggests our life and individual success is partially shaped by the circumstances that we are given. For example, someone who is born in a small beach town is more likely to learn how to surf as a young child than someone who is born and raised in the Midwest. Or, someone who is raised in a home where both parents hold a college degree is more likely to go to college themselves. In Alabama if you lived in the backwoods and your parents had mullets chances are not only do you have one but your wife does also. Be it luck or circumstances your story is not written for you. The choices that we make very well may be partially shaped by how we are raised and what we are told… but those circumstances are rarely insurmountable, and the things that we see as limitations can also be personal challenges. We, too, are able to give fresh life to our goals and plans.
Throughout this month, I hope that you will find the time to truly think on what would look like “good luck” to you as you glance back on your life a year from now. Your efforts today greatly increase the odds of good luck in the future.
Sincerely, Greg
It’s tax time.
Yesterday I sent my information to my accountant and today I get this email from him:
Greg, we have 6 tax attorneys, 7 assistants and 2 office staff and we all look forward to your returns. We save them for the end of the day and gather in the break room, make a few cocktails and then I read your deduction claims for the last year. I remember 2017, $3147.50 for a pallet of Crown royal you claimed as a medical deduction for stress relief. 2016, $1,312 paid to a dancer, in one dollar bills, and you even took photos of those 1132 bills. Your claim was that it was for dance lessons, most of us are still sharing that story. 2015, $700.00 for birth control, I actually liked this one. That year IRS allowed a child tax credit of $2000 and by spending $700.00 on birth control you saved the IRS $1300.00 not having to claim this deduction. I see for 2018 you claim that the breast implants for your employee, IE your spouse are on your list of “business expenses”. You provided a court ruling in favor of this deduction. As I understand a Female dancer did the same claim you are attempting and she claimed this as a business expense. IRS denied it but a tax court ruled in favor of the dancer, stating that the implants were a stage prop, and thus a legitimate work expense that can be deducted. You claim is that your employee, IE your wife, doesn’t actually do anything besides greet people at the front desk as they come in. Your claim is that she too is just a stage prop which in your definition makes her more pleasant to see. In order to determine the amount we might be able to claim I have a few questions. #1. Is any part of this deduction used for pleasure and not business only? #2. Does your employee, IE your wife know you are referring to her as a stage prop? #3. Since you are referring to your wife as a stage prop can we assume your marital status will be changing next year?
Brainstorming With Your Best Collaborator: You
You can’t always call a meeting of your colleagues or employees to brainstorm ideas. Sometimes you have to generate solutions or options on your own. Here are a few techniques to get your brain into a creative mode: My thinking is not unique but it is often never used. Work with those you know to help everyone succeed. Share their posts, promote their business and use them when you can.
